Coworker: “What!? A Drill Sergeant! I can’t see it! You’re so creative and easy going.”
Me: [half smirk] “I was always into art, doodling on anything. When I deployed, my Platoon Leader yelled at me for drawing on the helmets...you know, a favorite team, mottos & tattoo style drawings to get motivated. He threatened to charge me with office hours and extra duty for a month. All the Marines in my platoon cleared the tent to avoid getting yelled at. Then the funniest thing happened, he leaned in and asked/told me to draw the Notre Dame Fighting Irish logo in exchange to forget the vandalized government equipment. "It needs to be the best drawing Marine!". A few minutes later, BOOM!, a satisfied client … proBono!
Thanks Sir! ... and like you, I did get home for Christmas before we deployed even though we were ordered to stay within 50 miles of base. (another story for another day).
I love telling this story because he was my first disgruntled yet satisfied client. The moral of this story is, I love what I do as a creative professional.
I remember a coworker commenting my tattoo,
“You were in the Marine Corps?”
Me: “Yup.”
Coworker: “What did you do, Graphics?”
Me: “Nope, Infantry 0311. I'm a Drill Sergeant in the Army now.”
